As many of you know on April 20th two students, Eric Harris and Klebold opened fire on their classmates in Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, effectively taking over the school. What happened shocked the world which is now searching for answers. I must say that the happenings disturbed me as well. I am not going to make a page of the details, or anything else, I feel that even that cannot express how I feel, nor anyone else. Many people are trying to blame the easiest thing: the media. On an issue such as this one, it is impossible to place blame on specific people and objects. The important idea is that people learn from this experience so that it does not happen again. I sympathize for the students of Columbine High School in the most sincere way. I cannot imagine what it would be like if something as drastic as this happened at my school. My condolences go out to the families of the victims and even the parents of the boys who did the shooting. Although they are the most culpable, they still have a lot to deal with because of all of this.
Do I think that we can work this out before it happens again? I don’t know. The causes of this case are so manifold that it is impossible to try to name them all. People ask “How could the parents / teachers / fellow students not realize what was going on with these two boys?” It is hard to tell why people did not pick up on the signals that the boys were putting out, but all of this is in hindsight, and as such is not impartial. What people have to realize is that every school has disturbed children Some show it more than others. There are many studies out that show how to pick up the signs that are many times less than obvious. I urge everyone to look at these lists, and try to change your behavior. Everyone takes things in different ways, and we have to be sensitive to that. In the end, the change must be in everyone, which is unrealistic but necessary. Just Try.
